An anthology series, offering a multisensory window into the experiences that shaped the identity of the girl-next-door who just happens to be not white. Sharp, witty, unfiltered tales of life as a 1st gen immigrant navigating the duality of 2 cultures: Eritrean/Ethiopian heritage and British identity. It is the Black Mirror of stage.
Defying traditional theatre formats, I AM is a story within a story, part docu-theatre part part fantastical. You watch in real time art imitating life imitating art, never knowing which is coming 1st. A cinematic immersive experience, with a multimedia orchestra, interweaving an emotional rolla costa of a story. You would never believe it was all being self operated in real time by Lula and her wearable tech MiMu Gloves (midi gestural controller). Described as The Future of New Storytelling., it will teleport you to a different world.

I AM – ONE OF MANY
Time is running out. Father’s dementia is stealing his past, her heritage, and their shared identity. As his memories fade, so do her connections to her roots. This pilot episode is the 1st offering in this modular series, exploring what happens when a displaced community, across generations, is threatened by the erasure of history. It asks: when you’ve left everything behind for the promise of something better, and the ‘something better’ isn’t ‘better’, what next? When you have nothing but memories and memory is fading, what do you have?
I AM – A WALKING UNIVERSE
‘Woman, Godlike. A Walking Universe, with the power to create life. When the mind forgets, the body doesn’t, every traumatic event is etched into the fabric of DNA. Memories manifest themselves like a pollutant…‘
Enter the studio of Lula.XYZ, the creator, where words come to life. However, as she attempts to pen the next chapter to her namesake character (Lula Berhane), ‘life lifes’. Doctors explanation: It’s the black women curse. This episode is a poetic reflection of a harrowing true story of overt medical racism happening in this day and age on western shores.
COFFEE CEREMONY
To encourage dialogue about the themes of the show, an excerpt [Naming Ceremony] is presented in an interactive conversation staged within a Coffee Ceremony [a traditional Habesha custom] experience. This format has low-no tech requirements & can be housed anywhere.
Participants sit in a circle where fresh coffee beans are roasted before brewing, homemade fresh popcorn is served whilst excerpts of the script are used to navigate a conversation. It feels less like a performance but rather a naturalistic organic conversation amongst friends.
Perfect for community outreach and team building.
